DATA 1004 - Introduction to Data Analytics and Statistics

With the increasing amount of our activities being tracked, analyzed, and used to predict future actions, data analytics now plays a crucial role in understanding the world around us. As citizens, it is important for us to be literate in how to interpret data, analyze data, and how to present data effectively. This course introduces students to the field of data science through basic mathematics and statistics principles as well as computational tools used to perform data analytics. Topics include data acquisition, preparation, manipulation and visualization, programming, and exploratory data analysis. Students will learn a range of skills necessary to work with real-world data applied to many fields of study, research, and citizenship. The course culminates in a final project that calls on students to integrate and apply skills learned over the semester, including data selection, cleaning, exploratory analysis, visualization, and storytelling. The course will include an introduction to the R statistical programming environment. No prior data or coding experience is required. Standard grading
