IDS 2124 - Let’s Talk about Race, Racism, and Antiracism

This is a seminar style course led by 6 faculty members on Race, Racism, and Anti-racism. As a group the faculty will choose a variety of books in terms of genre that are all about Race, Racism, and/or Anti-Racism and are authored by BIPOC writers. The variety will be expressed in terms of genre of writing, topic addressed, and identity of the author eg. ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc. Each class will have a new selection of books that converge under a theme that fits into the broader category of Race, Racism, and Anti-racism.

This is an academic and classroom opportunity to engage in serious and much needed conversations about the books and topics they cover. Students are expected to come to class having prepared the reading and ready to engage in discussion. While there are no exams in this course, and it is a credit/no credit course, students will be expected to participate in a midterm and final conversation about the slate of texts with all the faculty in attendance. Additionally, students will mark their journey through the class with an initial reflection and a final reflection. Each faculty member will engage the students in discussion of their chosen text and this might occasionally involve some written work. Attendance is required although we understand that things can get in the way. Skipping more than one session per book or a total of 4 sessions will put you in danger of not passing the course. Grades of credit or no credit will be determined by course engagement and that begins with attendance. CR/NC Grading
