HIST 2434 - Mythmaking in Latin America

1 Course Unit(s)
Like Americans who draw on the American Revolution, the Civil War, and other episodes in the American past to understand and frame their present, Latin Americans have often turned to their histories to explain how they see their own times.  From Fidel Castro’s frequent allusions to independence fighter José Martí to Frida Kahlo’s depiction of Aztec imagery in her works of art to Gabriel García Márquez’ retelling of the story of Simón Bolívar, examples of Latin Americans’ engagement with history abound.  This course explores Latin Americans’ arguments over the past and the ways in which they have approached history to inform and shape their present, focusing on the uses of history in Latin American politics and popular culture during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
