EDU 3034 - Teaching Literacy in the Elementary Grades


1 Course Unit(s)
Familiarizes teacher education students with the cognitive, theoretical, and linguistic foundations of literacy development with an emphasis on the elementary grades. Students will analyze literacy instruction and assessment processes related to foundational literacy skills such as phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Students will construct integrated learning experiences that foster language development and promote increased skill in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. Study of children’s literary texts, both fiction and nonfiction, will be emphasized. A special focus will be placed on designing culturally responsive literacy instruction for diverse learners.
