Despite the ongoing growth and popularity of young adult literature, the love of reading often dissipates after the elementary years. By reading a variety of young adult fiction, students in this class can discover/rediscover the pleasure of reading while gaining new insights into life’s most perplexing issues for young people. Common YA themes and problems addressed in the literature include teenage alienation and isolation, racism, sexism, dysfunctional families and/or relationships, friendship, identity development and change, body image, gun violence and suicide.
