PSY 2164 - Body, Brain, and Bias

This course examines ways in which biological and biomedical research has been used to support gender and race inequalities or contribute to stereotypes about gender and race differences. Students will examine research articles and critiques of those texts in order to investigate the extent to which biological research genuinely contributes to understanding gender and race differences. Focus will be placed on neurosexism, the use of brain imaging techniques to make claims about innate sex differences and their contribution to gender roles, as well as on the application of misinformation within biology and psychology to explain health disparities and racialized medical treatments.
