In addition to the typical coming of age and identity themes, common topics or issues in these novels include alienation, LGBTQAI rights, racism, homophobia, dysfunctional families, sexual abuse and assault, intersectionality, body image, friendship, first love, teenage pregnancy, disabilities, gun violence, and suicide.
