CLA 2074 - Magic and Mystery Cult in Antiquity 1 Course Unit(s) HIST 2074 In the ancient world, supernatural and mythical understanding added dimensions of meaning to life. While many myths and cult practices were socially acceptable, mystery cults existed on the margins of toleration, and some forms of magic were well beyond the pale. Exploration of the beliefs, prayers, spells, and rituals, affords a fascinating view of metaphysical mindsets. It also provides an illuminating perspective into the formation of socially condoned, tolerated, and condemned ideas of reality. (Pre-Modern Field)
