WGS 2184 - Bodies Unbound

1 Course Unit(s)
PHIL-2184
This course explores America’s fascination with weight and obesity from a socio-cultural-philosophical perspective.  Class topics include: the relationship between fat and social class, the diet industry, race and obesity, the search for a fat gene, campaigns against childhood obesity, fat and gender, neoliberalism, fat in popular culture, sexuality, and fat liberation.  We will also pay particular attention to the ways that women’s bodies have been overdetermined by cultural narratives about weight-both past and present.
